On What Embodiment Might Have to do with Cognition

چکیده
Without widely accepted and acceptable characterisations of what is to be meant by the terms cognition and embodiment, to ask what the role of embodiment in cognition is remains an illformed question. The connection between cognition and physical embodiment is however an important issue, and investigating it may well bring some enlightenment to the concepts of cognition and embodiment. In this short paper I offer some observations on what seem to be some important consequences of physical embodiment on the nature of cognition, at least cognition as it might need to be in physically embodied agents. These are all derived from my own work on physically embodied mobile robots and point to the need for a dynamical systems approach to understanding cognition, at least in physically embodied agents.

Interpretations of embodied cognition
The concept of embodied cognition (EC) is not a settled one. A variety of theorists have attempted to outline different approaches and meanings related to this concept. They range from radical embodiment to minimal embodiment, and a number of positions in between. In addition, a variety of approaches to the study of cognition have been closely associated with the notion of embodiment – includin...
متن کاملEmbodying the Mind and Representing the Body
Does the existence of body representations undermine the explanatory role of the body? Or do certain types of representation depend so closely upon the body that their involvement in a cognitive task implicates the body itself? In the introduction of this special issue we explore lines of tension and complement that might hold between the notions of embodiment and body representations, which re...
متن کاملLocked-in syndrome: a challenge for embodied cognitive science
Embodied approaches in cognitive science hold that the body is crucial for cognition. What this claim amounts to, however, still remains unclear. This paper contributes to its clarification by confronting three ways of understanding embodiment—the sensorimotor approach, extended cognition and enactivism—with Lockedin syndrome (LIS). LIS is a case of severe global paralysis in which patients are...
متن کاملWhat’s that Thing Called Embodiment?
Embodiment has become an important concept in many areas of cognitive science. There are, however, very different notions of exactly what embodiment is and what kind of body is required for what type of embodied cognition. Hence, while many nowadays would agree that humans are embodied cognizers, there is much less agreement on what kind of artifact could be considered embodied. This paper iden...
